Finding Cheap Power Cords for Laptops

If your laptop lasts long enough, eventually you may find yourself needing a new power cord to keep everything running smoothly.  There is some good news and some bad news when it comes to getting a replacement power cord.  The good news for consumers is that, generally speaking, these accessories are inexpensive and won’t make a big dent in your wallet to replace.  The bad news is that power cords are an absolute necessity, especially if you want to ever use your laptop for more than a few hours again.  While you could rotate external batteries, the issue of charging your computer and charging the batteries still comes up.  It makes more sense to have a power cord.  Finding a good cheap power cord for you laptop isn’t difficult.

One of the first things you will need to do before buying any inexpensive laptop power cord is to make sure that any cord you buy can actually be used with your computer.  There are many power cords specifically made by the company for their own brand: in other words Toshiba makes power cords for Toshiba laptops, Compaq makes power cords for notebook Compaq computers, and so on and so forth.  Some of these computers are fairly standard in how the power cords are made and they can easily function with a generic inexpensive power cord that isn’t specifically designed for one company.  These generic versions are often cheaper than power cords specifically designed by a company for their own products, but they’re not advisable with every notebook computer model.

Some computer companies are adamant that a generic power cord should never be used with their notebook computers, and Toshiba laptops are especially hard lined about this.  Toshiba laptops always emphasize only using Toshiba power cords when replacing an old version with a new one.  Before making any type of a purchase it’s a smart move to know whether or not generic laptop power cords are a viable option for you or if you need to make sure to stay within a certain company.  While power cords can be very cheap, saving $10 on a power cord is definitely not worth it if you end up ruining a $700 laptop.

There are many different places you can go to find this information.  Online forums often discuss this issue, and many company FAQs will also tell you all the information you need on these types of issues.  Local computer repair and services stores are also often more than happy to give you advice on whether or not a generic laptop power cord is an acceptable option for the type of computer you have or not.   This one piece of information is the single most important thing you need to know before making a purchase.

Finding a cheap laptop power cord isn’t hard.  These are not expensive pieces of equipment, and even if you find that your notebook computer shouldn’t work with a generic laptop power cord you should still be able to find the perfect match for $20 or even well under.
