I have found a lot of online retailers who are basically nothing but a bait and switch scam. They advertise cheap products, then when you order, they say it’s on back order and to call them. Once they get you on the phone, they try and sell you something else. Most of the time they didn’t even have the product advertised in the first place.

Reviews of this laptop power supply or AC adapter (whatever you want to call it) are mixed. Some say this product worked fine, (and that’s all they said) but most seem to find that the adapter pins do not fit their laptops.

We would definitely recommend doing your research on this product to make sure it will fit your laptop or notebook. Many say the design and materials are cheap as well. It is hard to imagine something priced this cheap could be of significant quality and claim to be the all-inclusive mobile power solution.

For the life of us, we cannot find a significant brand name on this item, it just appears everywhere as 90W Universal Car Notebook DC Adapter Power Supply. There are similar products listed on most sites, some under the brand name Ritmo, but they’re generally $20-$30 higher in price. The reviews on this product were fairly hard to find also. Due to that fact alone, we would probably steer away from this product.

With that said, if you get free shipping and want to take the chance with this product, it could save you a significant amount of money. However, you may be better off finding a refurbished ac adapter or power supply for your specific laptop or notebook and purchasing an adapter for your vehicle. Sure this is going to cost you a lot more, but the car adapter can be used for other power devices as well, like a travel printer.

The computer and laptop are complex technology wizardry, as we know, especially for any of us who have worked on them ourselves. Inside every computer is a component that is considered the lifeblood of the hardware system; the laptop power supply. The power supply is responsible for powering the entire system; the motherboard, the hard drives, the CD and DVD drives and many other possible components and even some peripherals. They work simply by converting the alternating current (A/C) to a direct current (D/C) which, like most electronic devices, is what computers use. Like any laptop, the Compaq is prone to parts going bad. However, one does not need to be an expert technician to troubleshoot a Compaq laptop power supply. Actually, troubleshooting and replacing your power supply can be done with a few simple tools.

The first thing is to perform some basic troubleshooting of your Compaq laptop’s AC adapter. Make sure the adapter is snugly plugged into the port on the back of the Compaq (duh, obvious we know, but you’d be surprised at some of the support calls we’ve handed over the years. It is also good to ensure that the AC adapter is securely plugged in either a wall socket or the surge protector and not loose (OK, duh again, we’re just sayin’…). Second, it is also important to ensure to check the monitor settings. You’d be surprised again at how many times people think they’re laptop is now powering on when they simply have their monitor turned down or it’s malfunctioning. A Compaq laptop has brightness keys at the top of the keyboard, just above the numeric keys. Try adjusting these to see if your screen comes back on.

Third, always check the battery indicator light. For instance, if it appears to be out of battery or is suffering a power failure. If flashing or has an indication of a power problem, the laptop’s “LCD closed switch” may be malfunctioning. The switch actually acts as a sensor, which can detect if the laptop is closed or open. In most cases, the switch gets stuck in a “closed position” (although it is already open) and will result the monitor’s back-light to stay off. On most Compaq models, the switch can be found right beside either the left or right hinge at the bottom of the laptop’s display. Try tapping this switch a couple of times with the use of a finger to loosen it and free it up in a closed position.

Fourth, check to see if your laptop’s battery is no longer functioning and needs replacement. Most of these batteries will have an average life of 1000 charges before they start to deteriorate and not hold a charge. Eventually, the batteries will really “die” and will have to be replaced. A common problem prior to a battery dying is it will start to lose the amount of time it will stayed charged. However, this can also be caused by a bad power supply or one that is not made specifically for your laptop model.

If none of these troubleshooting techniques work, you more than likely need to start looking for a new power supply. Obviously these trouble shooting techniques are fairly basic and are not found only with Compaq laptop power supplies.
